OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

Fruit Processing: Northern Tanzania has very significant fruit production in the hands of small growers. There are no large or medium scale processors. The Market Intermediary system will allow access to sufficient volumes to develop a fruit processing operation to make juice and concentrate it for export. When qualities are confirmed, expansion will move the business toward creating a local brand. The operation should be based in Tanga or Morogoro.

Meat Processing: The Tanzania has 17 million head of cattle and no industrial scale meat processors. The Small Holder model of supply management will allow efficient access to these resources that both brings cash into the pastoralist communities and does not require them to shed their cultural tradition. The operation will require three years marketing to the local market before a standard compliant system to control provenance is established. The Tanzanian Government is actively seeking a role for the pastoralist population in the formal economy and would greatly welcome this initiative.

Spice Packing: Tanzania is already established in the European and Gulf markets as a spice supplier in cardamom and cloves. However the inefficiencies of the agricultural value chain have led it to consistently shed market share. The CANTAN model will allow an efficient chain to be developed and take advantage of the massive gap in paprika supply left by the decline of Zimbabwe exports. The operation be located near the fruit business in Tanga.

Bio – Medicinals: Pharmaceutical, supplement and cosmetic operators are increasingly interested in natural ingredients for their products. Tanzania climatic conditions which allow it to produce a wide range of products through the whole year make it a natural place for the supply. New products are entering the market all the time and we can expect that after the Asian and Native American products, that traditional African products will also become part of this trend.

Cashews Packing: Tanzania is a leading cashew producer. However its crop is processed and packaged in India. The growing areas overlap with much of the fruit growing areas. With a valid market outlet and the existing scale of accessible production through market intermediaries the processing and packaging can viably be done in Tanzania.

Food Processing: Cantan Tanzania is preparing a plan to market a vegetable preserve into the American market based on Small Grower production. At present, production and processing are planned for the Arusha area.
