The Tanhort.com website represents a group of Profit and Non-Profit companies involved in developing Horticulture projects in Northern Tanzania based on Small Grower Production. Though Tanzania is categorized as a Least Developed Country –LDC – it boasts considerable resources and an enviable political stability. It is often argued that this political stability comes as a result of the Tanzanian penchant for discussion and consensus building. Within this context the companies participating in the initiative have created an informal association to work toward a common goal.

Defining this goal comes as a result of the combination of the stability and abundant resources mentioned above and the confluence of three developmental targets. These are i) an agreed focus on Agriculture ii) a prioritization on exports and import substitution and iii) an official realization that the Private Sector must lead in this development.

In part as a result of a socialist past, and in part from its slow and steady approach, the opportunities inherent in this availability of resources and concurrent openness to business and investment have not yet been realized. The constraints to such realization are a matter of considerable debate. The solution proposed by the Tanhort website participants is to suggest integrated solutions carried out by multiple entities along the value chain.

In effect the group proposes a new idea in Social Entrepreneurship creating a Win-Win between business and development.
